Playbill in the Round: The Ladies Who Broadway
The 2023-24 Broadway season is poised to be a historic one, as women in theatre take on more roles onstage and behind the scenes than ever before. To celebrate that, Playbill put together a roundtable conversation for our new Playbill in the Round series. We brought together four women of different disciplines who are leading shows this season: Amber Iman, one of the leads of Lempicka; Jessica Stone, the director of the Tony-winning musical Kimberly Akimbo and director of the musical spectacular Water for Elephants; Heidi Schreck, the Tony-nominated writer/actor who is creating an all-new, stirring adaptation of Uncle Vanya; and Camille Brown, the Tony-nominated choreographer who is collaborating with Alicia Keys on Hell’s Kitchen. These four women sat down and discussed what drew them to theatre, how they grew their careers, the important of speaking up for yourself in the rehearsal room, and balancing work with motherhood. This expansive, dynamic conversation is the enlightening watch not just for women, but for anyone trying to figure out how to create a lasting career in the arts.

Contestants submit a self-tape audition singing the song of their choice. We invite performers of a range of ages (16 and up), all races, creeds, gender identities, sexual orientations, shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to submit. Measured in Love
One positive thing that has come out of the Broadway shutdown is that more people than ever before understand just how big the theatrical community is. Broadway isn’t just the stars and the writers—it’s a whole team of designers and others, who have their own teams working for them. And Broadway isn’t just Broadway: It’s regional theatre and community theatre and national tours, all of which serve to inspire the next generation of theatremakers. All of that was explored in the eight-part video series Measured in Love. Sponsored by Lexus and streaming every Tuesday, the series featured a different theatremaker each week, talking not just about their love of the industry but also about how everyone involved with a show relies on one another, eliciting a magical alchemy that results in a Broadway show.
Women in Theatre Centennial Celebration
In honor of the centennial of the 19th Amendment, this virtual event produced and presented by Playbill will celebrate the contributions women of all colors and creeds have made to the theatrical landscape over the last 100 years. Co-hosted by two beloved members of the Broadway community, “Women in Theatre: A Centennial Celebration” will commemorate the fight for gender equality while recognizing the battle that continues to this day. The event will be hosted by a pair of A-list Broadway talents to be confirmed, and the event will air as a benefit performance for an initiative that supports the progress of women in theatre.
